Wolf Bite (The Blue Mountain Wolf Pack #5) - Emma Dean Page 0,2

Zoe admitted, watching as the fire became nothing more than embers. It was almost time to go to bed so they could get an early start in the morning. “I just need someone secure enough to let me do what I need to do.”

“And what’s that?” Chris sounded genuinely curious for the first time. They rarely talked about her sexual preferences and Zoe wondered what had changed. Was it because she’d rejected him?

All she could think of was the way she felt when she saw pictures of men with their wrists bound and that look on their face…

It made her mouth water.

“I just need someone to trust me,” she said, trying to shake off the images. “Someone who’s not afraid to beg me for what they want.”

She never should have said that out loud, but the bourbon had loosened her control and the filter was gone.

The way Chris looked at her was exactly why she’d never said anything about it before.

“A girl?” he asked after an awkwardly long pause.

“I’m not a lesbian.” Zoe stood and grabbed her backpack, tossing it inside the tent. “Women are beautiful, sure. I’m just not sexually attracted to them. Unfortunately.”

Chris laughed. “Unfortunately?”

“Why would I want to date a guy when I could date a woman?” She arched a brow at him, and his smile widened. “They sure smell a lot better than guys do.”

“Ain’t that the fucking truth.” Chris picked up his backpack and the sound of a branch snapping made them both freeze.

Zoe looked under his shoes and saw nothing but dirt. She searched the trees, blood pounding through her body as adrenaline started to flood her system.

“It’s too early,” Chris whispered. “The bears should be hibernating.”

“Not the cougars,” she whispered back, grabbing the hatchet from her backpack.

“Are there wolves in Silver Falls?” Chris asked, yanking his hunting knife from his belt.

“I don’t think so.” She pressed up against his back, trying to remember everything she’d learned about encountering wild animals while backpacking.

“Well, I’m pretty sure that’s a fucking wolf,” Chris hissed, pointing at two glowing orbs among the trees.

She squinted, not understanding what she was seeing. “It’s too high off the ground. It has to be a bear.”

Then it stepped closer and they both took a step back. Her grip on her hatchet was so tight her fingers ached.

“That’s not a fucking bear,” Chris whispered, putting his body between hers and the massive fucking thing that took another step closer.

“I’ve never seen a wolf that big.” Zoe held onto the back of Chris’s jacket, searching the trees around them. “Do you think it’s alone?”

“Lone wolves are extremely rare.” Chris pushed her back another step and she bumped into something warm.

Zoe turned and screamed when she saw another wolf just as big as the first one.

It leapt towards her and she swung her hatchet, feeling it sink deep into the wolf’s side at the same time its teeth sank into her skin.

Liam

He ran as fast as he could, his twin at his side like always. They were shadows of each other and always had been since the day they’d come into this world together.

Right now, they were trying to prevent a massacre from happening, one that including his potential mate.

Fear and rage were constant companions in his mind and heart ever since their parents had been slaughtered during the bloody reign of the old alphas. Nothing about their new life had really sunk in for Liam or Noah.

And now he had a mate to fucking take care of, one that didn’t know who he was and might not survive the night if he didn’t get there fast enough.

Liam forced himself to run faster, knowing his twin could keep up – and he did without even a moment’s hesitation.

Sometimes he thought the twin bullshit was all a lie, and there were other times he knew in his soul it was true. He felt it in that moment as they leapt into the clearing, smelling blood. Neither had to say anything.

Teeth sank into flesh and they ripped into the throats of the wolves biting random humans in the woods. A rash of attacks had the entire Blue Mountain Pack split up and desperately trying to prevent the slaughter that fell into the far reaches of their territory.

With one shake he heard the neck crack of the wolf underneath him and Liam turned, licking the blood from his snout as he scouted the area with his heightened senses. Noah finished off the other wolf who seemed injured.
