Pretty Playboy (Cocky Suits Chicago #8) - Alex Wolf Page 0,1

don’t think she will, though. She clearly wants this to be pro bono. The leverage is all mine, because everyone knows The Hunter Group is the best firm in the city for these cases too. Any decent-sized union that matters is on our client roster.

“Yes, it is. Very. Nice.” She pauses. “It also gives me the opportunity to work with your firm, get a feel for how you operate. Meadow speaks highly of you. If you can do a good job for her, perhaps we can steer a lot of our legal work to The Hunter Group.”

Shit, maybe this chick does understand corporate politics. Now, if I fuck something up, it could be seen that I’ve cost the firm a client and all the money that comes with that.

Still, I find myself wanting Campbell to stand up so I can get a good look at her body. There’s something about her shoulder-length brown hair and light blue eyes that’s really doing it for me. Her little attitude does even more. Every time she low-key lays into me, my dick takes notice.

I can tell she’s petite by the size of her hands and her shoulders, but I want to see the rest. I start to imagine what it’d be like to hike her skirt up and bend her over the desk while she continues to run that smart mouth of hers.

She looks like she can read my thoughts, and I swear, her face turns slightly pink. Not something super noticeable, but just barely, like her temperature just ticked up a micro degree higher.

I’m getting a rise out of her. I think she likes this too.

Very interesting.

Our little staring moment doesn’t last long because Campbell goes right back to business. “I’m lining up possible scenarios where we can bring a suit against the company.”

Meadow and Pais both look at each other, then over at me, as if this is the big problem and I’m the one they want to solve it. Yeah, that’s it. They knew we’d clash and that I’d have no problem giving Campbell the truth, so they wouldn’t have to.

Assholes.

“Are you maybe getting a little ahead of yourself?” This time my eyes narrow, because I still need to perform my job duties.

“Excuse me?”

“Well, have you met with the company? Discussed this with them, tried to remedy the situation for your employee through mediation or any other avenues?”

Campbell glances down to Meadow and Pais as if I just asked an unfathomable question, then stares back at me.

Jesus fucking Christ. How intense can this woman get?

Something strange happens, though. The fire in her eyes slowly fades away some, and she takes a deep breath, then looks up at me. “I’ll do what I can to exhaust every avenue to help her out, obviously. But I also know this company. I fight with them over my warehouse guys nonstop. This will go to the courts. Trust me.” She glances down to the ladies, then back at me. “And they will pay.” She lets out a sigh. “I also think it would be better strategy for them to not know of my involvement, if it ends up with a lawsuit. I’d like to have the element of surprise, to get her a faster settlement. One look at your letterhead, and they’ll make a deal quickly. I promise. They just think they can bully her right now, because the non-union employees don’t usually have the financial means or the knowledge to defend themselves.”

There’s no hint of doubt in her voice, as if it’s a certainty this is how everything will play out and she’ll win. I get the feeling she wins a lot. I also get this little pang of guilt in my stomach, because her intensity is for the employees she represents, and she’s genuinely doing something nice for someone when she doesn’t have to. I think I’m a pretty good person; I try to do the right things. It’s why I only deal with non-profit matters. I need my life to have meaning, and I’ve seen the underbelly of the legal world.

But even I get lax on things sometimes, maybe don’t always do my job to the best of my abilities.

I’m pretty sure Campbell Page never falters. That’s the impression I get. Her intensity has a purpose, even if it is going to be a lot of fun driving her up the goddamn wall. I can’t deny there’s an attraction there. There’s something radiating from her that’s like a tractor beam, trying
