“Are you sure?” I couldn’t believe what he was saying. Lance wouldn’t joke about something so serious, but it just seemed impossible.

Lance swallowed hard as his eyes got glassy. “They said there’s almost no chance I could ever get pregnant. It’s just not meant to be.”

“It’s okay, babe. We’ll figure something out.” Edward’s voice cracked with emotion as he pulled Lance against his chest.

Watching my big brother fall apart was heartbreaking. Lance was always the tough one, the one who never cried when bullies teased him. And when anyone made fun of me, Lance would beat them up, no matter how much bigger than him they were.

He was my hero, then and now.

“What can I do?” I reached for his hand and clasped it between mine, wishing I could fix this for him, the way I knew he’d fix anything he could for me.

“There’s nothing to do.” He shrugged then wiped his nose on his sleeve, trying to maintain his cool. “I’ll get over it. Eventually.”

Edward kissed my brother’s head and took a deep breath as if he were inhaling Lance’s scent. “You don’t have to get over anything. If you want a baby, we’ll have a baby. We just have to be a little more creative now.”

“Definitely!” I would help in any way I could. Lance always wanted to be a dad. He used to talk about it even when we were kids, telling me about all the things he was going to teach his kids someday. There was no world in which he didn’t deserve to have a baby. “You can get a second opinion. Or a third. Doctors find new ways to do things every day. I’m sure there’s one out there who will know what to do.”

“Maybe.” Lance took a deep breath and smiled at me. “Or I’ll just be a badass uncle to your kids.”

Now I was the one holding back tears. “Lance, don’t say that. You’ll have a child of your own some day. I know it.”

“Well, there’s one way.” Edward cocked his head in my direction, as if I knew what he was asking.

I had no clue. “There is?”

Lance smacked Edward on the arm. “Honey, stop. I said no.”

“What?” I looked between my brother and his alpha. “What are you guys talking about?”

Lance huffed and shook his head. “Nothing. Really. It’s just...nothing.”

“No, it’s not nothing, Lance.” I squeezed his hand and held it between us. “If there’s something you can do, you should at least try. How bad can it be?”

“Well, it’s not what I can do…” He laughed before taking a deep breath. “It’s what you can do.”

“What I can do?” It took me a second to register what he was suggesting. And then I still didn’t understand what he meant. “What can I do?”

When Lance just sat there quietly, Edward cleared his throat and looked me in the eye. “Well, the doctor did have one suggestion that we are kinda hesitant to suggest because it’s a big ask.”

“Well, what is it already?” I was practically bouncing in my seat, eager to know how I could help. “If it’s expensive, I can help. I don’t have a lot of money but my credit is excellent. I can take out a loan or something. Just tell me what you need.”

Lance opened his mouth then closed it, as if forming words was physically painful for him.

I didn’t rush him. Whatever he was about to say was obviously difficult for him, and I didn’t want to cause any more stress than he was already feeling.

He took a deep breath and blew it out through his nose. “The doctor said the best way to have a blood child would be if we could find a surrogate...in the fam—.”

“I’ll do it.”

“What?” Edward and Lance spoke at the same time, both staring at me with shocked expressions.

“I’ll do it.” The first time I said it, it was instinct. I didn’t give any thought to what I was saying. But after a few seconds had passed, I knew I meant it with all my heart. “I’ll do it. I’ll be a surrogate for you guys.”

Lance flew into my arms, sobbing against my shoulder as he squeezed me tighter than I’d ever been squeezed before. “Do you mean it?”

“Of course!” I held him tightly, wishing I didn’t have to do this for him, wishing he could carry his own child. But I’d do anything for him, and if this was what he needed, I was on board. “I’m happy to.”

Edward wrapped
