Gorgeous: Book One (Gorgeous #1) - Lisa Shelby Page 0,3

search for EVC Corp online. At the top of the list is Exalt Venture Capital Corp, founded by Daniel and Patrick McKinley. A deeper dive into their homepage has my mouth hanging open as I stare at a picture of the President of Real Estate Development. Ronan McKinley's blue eyes have the same effect on me through my computer screen as they did in my dreams last night.

"Morning, superstar!" Alex chirps as she enters the office.

"Morning..."

"What's up with you? You look like you've seen a ghost."

"Not a ghost, but come here. Listen to this voicemail."

Alex holds the phone to her ear, and I can see the confusion on her face. When I point to the picture on my screen, her eyes nearly bulge out of her head.

She hangs up and slowly her face lights up. "I told you so!"

"What are you talking about? You didn't tell me I was going to come in to a job offer from EVC Corp this morning."

"No, but I told you that man was smitten."

"Come on, Alex..."

"Hey, Olivia. Fed Ex for you."

Alex and I turn to each other and both start laughing hysterically because this just can't be what we think it is. John, from the mail room, looks at us like we've both just been released from the looney bin, drops the package on my desk, and leaves.

"No way, Alex. It can't be." I look at the delivery on my desk like I'll catch some rare disease if I touch it.

"Oh, but it has to be. Open it! Open it!" she begs, bouncing up and down in her heels.

"I can't. You do it!"

"You sure?"

I nod my assurance.

She picks up the delivery and tears back the tab. She pulls the envelope open and peeks in cautiously before pulling out several pieces of paper. "Olivia..."

Jumping out of my chair, I rip the papers from her hands. In my fingers, I now hold a plane ticket to San Francisco, a hotel confirmation to the St. Francis, and a written invitation to meet with the Senior Administrative Manager, Evelyn Hunter, about a position as a personal assistant/event planner to the President of the Real Estate Division of EVC Corp.

"Who does he think he is?" I say, pacing the office, waving the papers in the air. "How can he be so arrogant to think I would just give up my life here and move to San Francisco so I could work for him! Egotistical bastard!"

I throw myself into my chair and dial the number on the bottom of the letter. I nearly pound off the numbers on my phone I dial with such anger.

"EVC, this is Evelyn.”

"Hello, this is Olivia Adams and..."

"So, nice to hear from you, Olivia. I hope this means you received your package?"

"I did..."

"Wonderful, I hope next Thursday works for you. We're looking forward to showing you a little bit about EVC and to see if we're a good fit for one another."

"I'm sorry, Evelyn, but I won't be able to make it next week. Thank you very much for the offer, but I'm quite happy where I am, and I'm not interested in a move right now. Again, thank you very much for your consideration, and I'll return the ticket today."

"That won't be necessary, Miss Adams. Please keep the ticket, but are you sure we can't convince you to change your mind? Mr. McKinley was very impressed with your work, and I think his offer would be quite impressive."

"Please give Mr. McKinley my sincere appreciation, but I'm really not interested. Have a nice day." I hang up the phone, shaking. All the while Alex stands next to me, looking dumbfounded.

Did I really just do that?

The rest of the day goes by in a blur.

By five o’clock, the day is over, but I don't recall a single conversation. Today has flashed by, and the only thing on my mind has been the man that has taken over my every thought.

I'm giving myself tonight, and then no more thinking about Ronan McKinley.

Crap! Hot, hot, hot!

The scalding hot coffee dripping down my arm is a testament to the day I'm having.

My car wouldn't start this morning, I was late to my first appointment, and the wedding that should be taking place this weekend has been called off because Scotty Clark couldn't keep it in his pants.

And now this...

I don't even know what I was thinking having coffee this late in the day to begin with. The last thing I need is another sleepless night.

The last two weeks I've
