more forcefully than he usually would have and raised a disapproving eyebrow at Papa before looking back at Tolly. “Can I get you some coffee, water?”

Tolly narrowed his eyes as they flicked to Papa. “No, thank you.” He gritted out the words like they were distasteful and, Kyron thought, as his dislike for alphas was so palpable, they probably were.

“Is it all alphas you dislike or specifically me?”

Papa smothered a cough and let himself out of the room. Kyron ignored the small sound of surprise from Tolly, sat down on the other chair next to him, and took a breath. Baiting him would get them precisely nowhere. “I’m sure you have questions.”

Tolly scoffed. “Only one. When do I get paid and how much?”

So it was going to be like that, was it? A small part of Kyron was disappointed and devilment made him want to point out that was two questions. Although why he thought this omega should be different from the rest of them was beyond him. Better to keep it a business transaction, and to be fair, money was why the man was here, so Kyron kept his temper in check. “Five thousand dollars now, another twenty when you present me with a healthy son.”

Tolly’s eyes immediately widened, and Kyron took some satisfaction in his surprise. He obviously thought Kyron was going to screw him over. It was a fair amount, and plus full medical and living expenses, he thought it was okay.

“Can I have it in cash? I’ll sign anything you want.”

Kyron gazed at the man. “You don’t have any other questions?”

“You’re renting my body,” Tolly said flatly. “I give you a baby and you give me the cash. I don’t see what else matters.”

Kyron did his best not to show surprise on his face. The man was a cold-feeling bastard, and with a bit of luck this would be over within one night. Maybe two, depending on his heat. Some of them lasted between forty-eight and seventy-two hours, but it was that middle day omegas were at their most fertile, or that’s what Papa had told him.

Kyron stood. “Then let me show you to your room while I get the papers printed. I’m sure you’re happy with the standard binding?” The standard one was the simplest. Some of the bindings were so complicated the contracts were hundreds of pages thick, including extensive medical and genetic tests. The highly prized omegas that could almost guarantee an alpha birth cost thousands with varying degrees of payment on the off chance the baby wasn’t an alpha but an omega. The only way to be sure was a scan after birth to show if the baby had an endometrial sac. There were also clauses depending on the health of the child. Professional omegas with a history of certain types of children could command hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Some of the rich families wanted guarantees and were happy to pay for the privilege.

“I can’t stay tonight.”

Kyron frowned. “Then when exactly are you planning on starting this contract? I understand your heat is approaching.”

Tolly deflated, and Kyron watched in surprise as he all but squirmed. If his skin hadn’t been so dark, Kyron was sure he would see him blush. “I can’t stay tonight.”

“Very well.” Kyron stood. “Then come back tomorrow and I will have the papers ready then.”

Tolly stood as well. “What about my money?”

Kyron gaped. “You said you can’t start tonight.”

“I still need the money,” he said stubbornly.

“You expect me to hand over five thousand dollars and let you leave? I understand an omega needs a few days to get settled. I will need my doctor to check you over, and—”

“Kyron?” Papa opened the door, his tone urgent. “Alec has come in saying there’s an older gentleman outside having trouble breathing. He needs—”

But neither of them got a chance to say anything else as Tolly rushed past them both. Papa shot a worried look to Kyron and they both hurried after him.

Tolly bolted down the front steps and sprinted across the circular driveway and to the right where Kyron’s and Papa’s cars were plus a couple of spaces for any visitors. Tolly went straight to an old station wagon where Alec and Tony had stopped their car. Tony was one of the ground supervisors and Alec was a mechanic. An older man was crouched down, wheezing, and another was trying—unsuccessfully—to get out of the car to help him. His missing left leg and the crutches that had fallen to the
